How to clean and care for marble

Marble is one of the most attractive of the natural stones and has long been associated with premium quality famously used to create sculptures, its beauty is unquestioned. The characteristic swirls and veins of marble makes it a unique and attractive feature in any home and its soft and even texture has made it ideal for intricate carving and so is utilised for fireplaces and even sink bowls in contemporary bathrooms.

Whatever the type of marble item in your home worktop, flooring, fireplace or even decorative sculpture you will want to keep it in the best condition to show its natural splendour.

Although marble is a natural stone and is both a strong and hard wearing material, like all stones it is porous and can easily absorb stains through the veins between the crystalline structure of the marble. We strongly recommend to protect your marble by sealing it with a impregnating stone sealer such as our Stonecare4u Eco Matt finish Sealer or, this penetrates the porous veins in the stone and seals them from becoming contaminated by any stains.

Materials that you should NOT use on marble:

Many household cleaning products contain either acids to cut through grease and scale or bleach, these are extremely harmful to natural stone and especially marble. Your cleaning product may not even say "not to be used on natural stone", it may say something like not to be used on " Acid sensitive surfaces".

Marble is a very acid sensitive surface, this is why we have developed a cleaning product especially for natural stone surfaces, not only does our Stonecare4u Stone Cleaning Spray, clean your marble, it protects, killing bacteria, viruses and fungi, it cleans and polishes in one and comes in a lovely apple blossom fragrance. Stone care for marble worktops and floors:

Simple everyday marble cleaning stone care tips:

Marble like many stones with a high shine surface are prone to water spots, so it is always a good idea to dry up any spills even water, any spills blot the spill with a paper towel, absorb as much as possible from the stone surface don't wipe, this may spread any potential stain. All natural stone is porous, it is a bit like a hard sponge, which like a sponge will take in water, oil and other fluids, some stones such as sandstone which is extremely porous will rapidly absorb liquids, while other stones which are denser and so less porous like marble are slower to take in a stain and may take up to an hour to absorb any liquid. But all stones will absorb even marble, so all stone needs protecting by using a stone sealer like Stonecare4u Eco Matt finish Sealer, this will penetrate the stone and seal the natural fissures in the stone. This natural characteristic of stone to absorb, can cause many problems of which staining is the most obvious. For more information on this problem and the many other problems that may be caused by this porosity please see our article Stone Care Tips. The Stonecare4u Eco Matt Finish stone sealer is ideal for using on marble and will offer protection to your marble from accidental spills.

Marble is perhaps the best example of stones incompatibility with acids, while all stone is damaged by acid, marble is severely damaged by acid, and will react with acidic liquids on contact. The acid breaks down the surface of the stone leaving dull areas and sometimes even deep pits over time. Even mild household acids, including fizzy drinks, wine, vinegar, orange juice, milk, and especially some household cleaning products damage these types of stone. The milder the acid, the longer it takes to damage the surface of the stone, and conversely stronger acids like those found in many cleaning products can damage the stone in seconds. This is why we recommend our Stonecare4u stone cleaning products which pH-balanced formula is designed to be used on stone and will clean and offer all the benefits of your favourite household cleaning products but not damage the stone.

For your Marble floors we have developed our Stonecare4u Stone Floor cleaning products, they come with a fresh clean lemon fragrance and offer all the same features as our stone cleaning spray in that they are PH neutral, environmentally friendly, kill bacteria, viruses and fungi and leave your marble sparkling clean as it also cleans and polishes in one.

Removing satins from your marble:

This is a special skill, basically it requires drawing the stain back out from the stain, it is a long and messy process and is not guaranteed in any way to completely free your marble from the staining. This is another reason why it is so essential to protect your stone with a sealer which will offer some protection from staining among many other problems.

However accidents as we all know happen, so if you do have a stain in your marble and want to try and clean it out the way it to use a poultice made from powdered compounds, such as kaolin, fuller's earth, powdered chalk, whiting or baking soda.

Depending upon your stain you may mix this power with different formulas and different ingredients. The paste is applied to the stained area and allowed to slowly dry, pulling the stain back out from the porous stone.

The poultice is covered with a piece of Clingfilm to allow the drying process to take enough time to draw out the stain ( it needs to be in place for at least a day and that is a minimum of the full 24 hours). The poultice is spread over the stained area to a thickness of about 1.5cm to 3cm deep with a wood or plastic implement to avoid any scratching of the marble surface, covered with plastic or Clingfilm and left to work for 24 to 48 hours.

This procedure may need to be repeated many times until the marble is free from the staining.

The quicker you deal with the stain the better, as the stain will continue to penetrate the stone and will in time dry out deep in the stone.

For more information on how to remove stains from your marble using this poultice technique and the formulas for making the poultice for each type of stain, you can use this link, this explains in a greater depth how it should be done.
